‘Wishes on the Wind’
Where gold illuminates sacred offerings and prayers find form.
Paintings by Stephanie Sandercock
Sculpture by Julie Moselen
At the heart of Wishes on the Wind lies a sacred act of remembrance and hope – prayers whispered into the wind, tokens tied to ancient trees, and the golden thread that binds together love, loss, and healing. Inspired by the Cloutie Trees near the sacred wells at Madron and Sancreed in Cornwall, this exhibition reflects the quiet ritual of leaving behind a piece of cloth or a whispered wish – offerings for those who have passed and affirmations for those still held close. Like the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi – where broken pottery is mended with gold, Stephanie Sandercock’s new paintings embrace the cracks and imperfections of life, honouring them not as flaws, but as pathways to deeper understanding. The veins of 24ct gold running through each piece symbolize endurance and grace, illuminating the spaces where life has fractured. Muscovite mica is scattered like jewels in some of the work, shimmering like sunlight on the sacred well, or a glint of sunlight through weathered fabric. This interplay of light and shadow evokes a tender equilibrium – where openness meets quiet power and what has been broken is not only repaired but transformed. Julie Moselen’s elegant metal and gold leaf sculptures explore the dynamic interplay of light, space, and form. With elongated, fluid lines and a sense of quiet movement, her forms suggest both natural growth and ascension – like branches reaching skyward or wishes rising on the wind. A strong visual language unifies each piece, balancing opposing forces: movement and stillness, power and grace, presence and absence. The use of gold leaf intensifies this sense of contrast—reflecting light, honouring ritual, and evoking both preciousness and impermanence. There is a reverent stillness in the way her sculptures hold space – each one a memory, a transition, honouring the invisible threads that connect us. Wishes on the Wind invites viewers to reflect on their own sacred offerings – on the quiet strength that arises through reflection and the beauty that emerges when love and memory are bound together with gold. Just as prayers tied to a tree are left to the mercy of the wind, these works speak to the faith we place in the unseen—the quiet hope that even the smallest wish might find its way home.
