Stuart Thorn

Stuart was born in Bude, and apart from his student days in London, has lived all his life on the north coast of Cornwall.

He studied Fine Art at Redruth and Falmouth Schools of Art at a period of great international significance, with lectures from artists from the St Ives School including Terry Frost and Denis Mitchell. Although he went on to become a successful graphic designer, their influence and inspiration still fuel a life-long love of painting.

Stuart chooses to explore the distinctive nature of the Cornish landscape and seascapes, from the large open expanses of the clay country to the protective enclosures of the Cornish harbour, and interpret the elements. He absorbs these personal impressions, and takes note of colour, shape and overall effects. His sketches and paintings are then executed back in the studio from memory and those brief on-the-spot notations. His paintings emerge and evolve; without looking to record accurate detail, he seeks to capture the essential character, the rhythm and the formal relationship of both landscape and seascape.
