‘Abstraction is a means of enlightenment, a kind of magic that reveals images of inner feelings beyond thought or mind. The work is not to be reasoned with or necessarily understood….it is to be experienced….to be discovered….. ’
The Penwith Gallery is delighted that the vibrant collective of artists known as Abstract 7 is returning to the gallery for another exhibition.
Abstract 7 are a group of 5 painters (Christine Allen, Sue Davis, Sean Hewitt, Peter Morrell and Frank Phelan), one potter (Paul Jackson) and one sculptor (Richard Holliday).
All involved favour the modernist approach and a philosophy of abstraction that echoes their appreciation of the New York abstract expressionists. They share the premise that subject matter carries less importance than feeling.
As Peter Morrell says: ‘People ask, what is it all about? I reply, I don’t know, I paint to find out’.
