Immerse is a new body of work by Justine Lois Thorpe inspired by her lifelong affinity to Cornwall and its rugged coastline which serves as both subject & catalyst.
Having grown up in St Agnes, on the west coast, the artist has a deep, physical & emotional connection to the Cornish Coastline. It has always been a place of solace, reflection, and creative renewal and her main source of curiosity.
Her paintings have always been the artist’s most natural form of self-expression, here offering a means to explore these connections and her emotional responses to nature and the restlessness of the Cornish coastline, it’s comforting embrace yet its sheer unpredictability. The rhythm of the tides, shifting skies, weathered cliffs, and vast horizons provide a constant source of inspiration.
The artist employs a spontaneous and intuitive process creating works of pure abstraction and abstract representation. Working predominantly with oils on board. Layers of paint are built, scraped back, and reworked, creating rich, layered surfaces and textures that evoke both the physical qualities of the coastline and the emotional response it inspires. Through bold mark-making, shifting colour, and atmospheric depth, her paintings capture not simply what is seen, but what is felt, those fleeting moments when seascape, memory and emotion collide.
Immerse invites you to step beyond observation and into experience. It is an exploration of connection to nature, to memory, and to the emotional currents that shape us. Through these works, the artist offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and become immersed in the beauty, power, and restorative spirit of the Cornish coast.
