7 Crows

7 Crows

The bronze crow sculptures displayed during 2020 at the Penwith Gallery St Ives are the work of sculptor Tom Leaper.

The story of the crows began when small paper origami birds began to appear on the front desk, left by an anonymous artist.  After some investigation the culprit was identified as the 7 Crows Studio (although the artist remains at large).  Tom happened to pop in to the gallery while the staff were discussing the mystery, and decided to take the idea further and enlarge them into bronze with marble plinths to raise money to fund the upgrade of the lighting in the gallery.  The originator of the origami crows happily agreed to the concept, and the work began…

The original 7 crows were 48cm tall and mounted on an individual plinth of jesmonite marble.  All of them have now found homes and the proceeds have paid for improved lighting for the gallery, and revamp of our sculpture garden.  The baby crows currently on display are half-size and are for sale at £850 each, and we also have one large crow for sale at £2300, which is 65cm high. These are being sold to fund the extension of our current archive into an Archive Study Centre.    Anyone who purchases a crow will therefore be part of the legacy of the building.
